Bagan

 

The main tourist destination in Myanmar is Bagan, capital of the first Myanmar Empire; one of the richest archaeological sites in South-east Asia. Bagan contains over 2000 edifices, the well-preserved pagodas and temples.  Situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyawaddy River. The Magic of Bagan has inspired visitors to Myanmar for nearly 1000 years.  Many ancient pagodas such as Ananda Temple, Bu Pagoda, Dhammayangyi, Gadawtpalin, Shwesandaw Mahabodhi ect., and ancient monestries can be seen in Bagan. 

Around Bagan – Mount popa, Tuyin Taung, Salay, Magwe 

Mt Popa is the dwelling of Myanmar Nats which is also a popular place to visit. It is an extinct volcano. Tuyin Taung and Tantkyi Taung lies on each side of the Ayeyarwaddy River.  Salay has the most prominent Salay U Ponnya Monastery with wood carvings. Magwe is another interesting city near Bagan. 

Handicraft shops and souvenir shops are available at hotels. Bagan produces most of the exporting lacquerware to many countries. Lacqueware shops and their production steps can be also visited. Many Lacquerware farms are available.
